Hi I’m a general contractor. A good quote includes everything you want in it. Generally stripping old shingles, rotted board replacement, new weather shielding (tar paper, and ice and water shield in the valleys and on the roofs edge) drip edge and shingles. It should include all labor and materials (unless you know of somewhere you can get them cheap, also some contractors add on 10% to materials). If you want the job done right you should have it stripped, however most of the time if you only have one layer of shingles on your roof you can just shingle right over them. Another thing to consider is cost; stripping it will cost more, sometimes twice as much in labor. And you want to make sure the guy is insured, get his info and check to make sure its legit and that it covers roofs. Next ask him for a few references and possibly pictures of recent jobs (to check his workmanship). Lastly get a price from 1-3 others to compare. If you want more info feel free to contact me. Oh also make sure you get a guarantee, in writing, to be leak and problem free for at least 2 years but try for 5.
