Open valleys are the only way to go. Woven and closed valleys can keep water out if done properly. However, the problem with them is water rushes from side of the valley to the other. Water gets trapped in between the plies of shingles. When water evaporates it expands 270 times as it changes to a gas. The pressure causes the shingles in the valley to blister. This means the valley shingles will die out much faster than the rest of the roof.
