DB asked:

How do i get payment from a roofing contractor if they dispute the the invoice? The problems is that i received an order for an item of works on the Wednesday in which the value would of meant that i lost money. So i quoted a new rate and discussed this with the roofers CM and agreed to carry out the works. I didn’t receive a new order because the roofing contractors were at a conference on the Thursday, was hungover on the Friday and the job started on the Saturday. The CM now has no recollection of any coversation and says he never received a revised quotation and will only pay the original order. The value is nothing spectacluar but the principle of the matter is eating away at me. Is there anything i can do? such as adjudication or arbitration? A valuable lesson has been learnt.

Thanks for your time.

spike asked:

We have a lot of roofing to cut to fit and have been advised against cutting it with a circular saw with a metal cutting blade. Instead we were told to use nippers as sawing it makes it rust. We have done this in the past and have never had a problem, however this is for an equestrian facility that will have high visiblity with the outside public and we want to put our best foot forward.

Any suggestions as buying a high-quality set of powered nippers is expensive versus buying metal cutting blades.

I am going to put a new metal roof on an older home that currently has split cedar shingles.Should I strip off the old shingles or is it just as good to nail the new roof on over what is already there? How do I know that the nails will hold?

Onyx Ninja asked:

We will need to replace our roof soon, and were thinking of getting steel in stead of shingles. I’ve read online that it costs more to buy a metal roof, however I was wondering….wouldn’t it be cheaper labor wise? Since I believe it comes in sheets it should install relatively faster then shingles wouldn’t it? Also, I know mobile homes tend to leak when their roofs rust out, but I read online the metal roofing for housing is generally guarenteed up to 50 yrs…..are they both the same type of roofing?

Thanks!

building a shed, taking it slow. If I sheath the roof with 1/2 inch OSB, will roofing paper protect the OSB from the rain for a couple days? OSB absolutely HATES getting wet!

Also, is there anything wrong with using roofing paper on the walls… tyvek is terribly expensive.

Independent_guy asked:

Hi,
A foofing Contractor I contacted suggested a new roof for just half the roof of an investment property. He said it will cost $3,800 just to do half the roof and that the other half is in a better condition. should I ask him to replace the entire roof or does it actually make sense what he suggests? also, it’s in Ontario Canada - is the price reasonable for half the roof of a single family 1600 sq. ft. house? THANKS.

went right asked:

THe best I hear is “seemless” metal roofing but it is also more expensive. I lived in a house once with the screw down metal roofing types and well there was leakage where the screws were screwed into thru the metal and then into the “runners or strappings”…. there is a little washer on the screw and it’s suppossed to seal it up but I guess it only lasts for a certain number of years before the wind and snow(weather elements) take their toll…
Is tin nailed down? or do they have that seemless nowadays?
